Hungry for hydration

I love water!

I love drinking it. I love my showers (really hot in winter!). I love swimming in it. I’ve always loved running under the sprinkler (though I did break my nose doing this when I was a kid). I love the rain…..and I know my skin loves water too.

Hydration is one of the best anti-aging habits you can get into – both inside and out.

Our bodies comprise up to 80% water, depending on our age. As we get older, this percentage decreases, and it affects many of our bodily functions as well as our skin. The skin’s surface is able to be kept soft and moist by sebum (all the oily stuff) and a natural moisturising factor (NMF – all the watery stuff).

The role of sebum is basically to form a film that protects our skin from moisture loss. NMF is a mixture of water, amino acids, lactic acid and other minerals that keep the skin moist and supple by attracting and holding water. The water content of the skin’s outer layer is around 30%, and this rises after treatment with certain humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, that boosts the skin’s ability to hold water. The fats/oils within the skin help to preserve this high water content, and provide a waterproof barrier that prevents water loss.

As we age, the skin loses some of it’s intercelluar lipids, and hence, gets drier as the water in our skin evaporates more readily. It is important to drink lots of water (advice varies from 1 – 2L/day) to keep our bodies and skin hydrated from the inside, but also to boost our skins ability to hold onto the water, with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. Rubifresh Ageless Day Creme, RubiRescue Complex, Coffee Seed Eye Gel and 3 anti-aging serums all contain natural hyaluronic acid. You can check them out here.

But just as important, is a good barrier to prevent moisture loss. That’s the role of creams, as opposed to gels. A natural moisturiser will protect the skin from moisture loss, and still allow the skin to breathe and carry on it’s normal functions.

So remember….

i) drink lots of water to hydrate from the inside

ii) choose products with boosted humectants such as hyaluronic acid

iii) complete the routine with a good natural moisturiser to protect the skin from moisture loss
